Peniche: Two Days of Surf, Sun, and Slow Living

Peniche is a small fishing town on Portugal's Atlantic coast. There are no big attractions. No crowds. Just beaches, waves, and good light.

I spent two days there recently with my camera, the Fujifilm X-E5 paired with the new XF 23mm f/2.8.

The beaches

Start with a walk along the coast. Peniche has several beaches, each with its own character.

If you want to watch serious surfing, head to Supertubos. It's one of the best beach breaks in Europe. Fast and hollow waves that draw surfers from around the world. Even if you don't surf, it's mesmerizing to watch.

If you're a beginner or just want calmer water, try Praia do Baleal or Praia do Gamboa instead. Good places to swim, learn to surf, or just sit on the sand.

Either way, you can find a café along the beach. Order a coffee or eat something with a view to the ocean. That's what I've done for the most part of the day.

The town

Peniche itself is worth a wander.

It's a working fishing town, not polished for tourists, which is part of its charm. The streets are quiet, and you'll find small cafés and restaurants with honest prices. Nothing fancy, but it's good to be in a place where you don't need a plan.

The sunset

Like in many ocean spot, this is the highlight for me.

For the best view, go to the Miradouro Junto ao Forte de Peniche, the viewpoint near the old fortress. Get there an hour before sunset, and find a spot along the rocks or the wall.

The light over the Atlantic is something else. Gold, then pink, then deep orange. Perfect for some silhouettes photos, and for just being there.
